Exercise or WAR?
A few Romans are getting whipped into shape — military style — with Pro Performance’s boot camp.

Early Tuesday morning, several sweaty, sore, but completely energized Romans finished up a rigorous workout routine while their trainer, looking every bit the quintessential marine drill sergeant, barked orders for them to follow.
Scott Hines, complete with stop watch and buzz cut, is the owner of Pro Performance, a sports performance and personal training center located on East First Avenue.
Along with trainers, Hines has designed a six-week fitness boot camp that combines cardiovascular and resistance training along with a weight loss plan.
Hines, also a strength and conditioning coach for the Rome Renegades, said the camp provides resistance training, cardiovascular exercise, push-ups, sprints, lunges, jumping jacks, jumping rope, mat work, stability ball/medicine ball training and stretching.
“This is about a lifestyle change,” he said. “This isn’t a quick fix. We look at nutrition as well as fitness.”
Mark Fisher said he signed up for the boot camp to get better conditioning and to lose a little weight.
“Tuesdays we do a lot of leg work, and on Thursday we do upper body,” he said. “Each day we do a half hour of calisthenics, and on Friday is the ‘fun’ day. We sprint up Clock Tower Hill and then go to the track.”
Fisher said he appreciates that Hines pushes him, and the other members, to do their best and go the extra mile.
A trainer at Pro Performance, said upcoming boot camp sessions are still open for people to sign up. One session takes place Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Childcare is provided.
The other class runs Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. Other sessions may be added if there is a demand.
Hughes said included in the boot camp package are one hour of cardio and resistance training, a specialized nutritional guidance plan for weight loss, sample nutrition bars and supplements, a fitness analysis, free attendance in any of Pro Performance’s aerobic classes (kickboxing and/or abs), and a free T-shirt and water bottle.
The cost of the camp is $375 per six-week session.
Misty Drake was in one of the center’s kickboxing classes and heard about the camp.
“It sounded terrifying at first,” she said. “But I love the leg training, and being in a group is great because you push each other.”
Drake said she’s never felt better, and doesn’t even mind getting up in time for the 5:30 a.m. session.
“After 30 it’s much harder to get in shape and stay in shape,” she said. “Plus, this is a great time for me to work out because my husband and children are still asleep. This is all ‘me’ time.”
Another boot camper who is singing the praises of Hines’ regimen is Keith Holloway, who initially thought the camp would simply be a way to get fit before summer.
“I just wanted to see if I could get through it,” he said. “I like that the workouts are so different. You never get bored. The early session is great for me because I could not do all this after a day at work; and working out in the morning really pumps me up for the rest of the day.”
Aside from boot camp, Pro Performance offers a full schedule of kickboxing classes at $35 per month, as well as abs strength and toning classes for $20 per month. Childcare is provided for all the sessions.
“This is not for the lighthearted,” Hines said of his rigorous boot camp fitness regimen. “But I guarantee you’ll get the best full-body workout you’ve ever gotten. You’ll lose weight, improve your muscular composition and increase your stamina.”
