It drives me nuts to see the youth of today growing bigger and bigger by the day. We as parents are slowly killing our own children, not physically, but nutritionally. In the last 30 years childhood obesity has more than tripled and the percentage of children from the ages 6-11 who are obese increased form 7% to 20%. (side note, I’m not blaming McDonalds for the increase in obesity, this is just the picture I choose) Its hard to blame the kids for what they eat and do. They are not the ones going to the grocery store on a weekly basis buying all the junk food, we are. We control everything that they put into their mouths. Don’t sit there and tell me that your kid wont eat what you make for dinner (assuming what your making for yourself is healthy), let he or she not eat for an hour or two and by now they will be really hungry and eat whatever you give them. I’m not saying starve them, but let them get good and hungry and they will eat it, watch. If we don’t buy it at the grocery store, then they wont have it to eat at the house. Our 2-year-old Peyton is the worst. If you give her anything sweet or crappy that’s all she will crave and eat all day long. As long as we keep that away from her she is fine. Don’t get me wrong we do give our girls junk food and sweets from time to time but its limited and it’s a treat. For instance, after dance class on Thursday nights we walk down to Honey Moon Bakery and they each get a mini cupcake. Its something special and they look forward to it and really enjoy it. Kids need to be kids, they need to play, have fun, and eat junk every now and then just not all day every day. We as parents need to take responsibility for our children and their lives. We have lived ours, hopefully we have done everything we wanted to do, by feeding them unhealthy foods and making poor choices for them, we are cutting their lives short. Not only are we taking years off their lives but we are setting them up for failure in the future. They will continue to make the same poor choices later on in life. Its not rocket science, cut out the fried foods, breads, pastas, and sugary drinks. I cant tell you how pissed I get when I see a 2 or 3 year old drinking sweet tea, or Coke, or Sprite. I see it all the time at restaurants, and then hear, “that’s all they will drink.” Bull crap, we order ours water, milk, or chocolate milk, mostly water and they don’t have a problem drinking that. Like with the food, let them go long enough without drinking and they will drink anything you put in front of them. Buy healthier snacks, we buy mini Oh Yea protein bars, all natural NOW bars, yogurt, and single serving 100 calorie chips. Yes I said chips, its ok EVERY NOW AND THEN remember they are kids. We spend UNLIMITED amounts of money and time on our kids to make sure they are happy and have everything that they want; we are a parent that’s what we do. But how can they be happy when they are always sick, being picked on because they are fat, or so out of shape that they cant walk to the refrigerator without wheezing? Ask yourself that. Step up, take responsibility, start being a parent, and STOP killing your kid!
